Unlike what most people think, hair loss is a problem that affects children too. It can be a scary phenomenon to see bald spots or thinning hair in kids. But the thing is, there is hop and this can be treated successfully with the correct diagnosis.
The reasons for hair loss in children – Most children of 26 months or older the reasons may have hair loss due to:
Ringworm: It is a fungal infection and when this occurs on the scalp it can cause oval or round patches to appear. If this is the case, your kid’s pediatrician can diagnose this by a examining the scalp microscopically. Normally this can be treated with an oral antifungal medicine along with an anti-fungal shampoo. This condition is contagious and you should take the proper precautions to prevent it from spreading.
Alopecia areata. This is condition that is not contagious condition and the hair loss is due to the attack of the body’s immune system on the hair follicles. You can see the abrupt appearance of oval or round patches of hair loss. The patches will appear smooth , lacking scaling or broken hairs. This is sometimes accompanied by ridging and pitting of the nails. This condition is not curable but in kids there is a chance of controlling it. For younger kids the treatment is mainly application of strong corticosteroid ointments or creams to the affected areas.
Trichotillomania.: This occurs when a child tugs or pulls the hair. The loss of hair is patchy and you can see hair broken in many lengths on the hand that the child uses the most. This could caused by stress and you need to pacify the child when you notice him/her doing this. Counseling can also help
Another cause for Hair Loss In Children is called traction alopecia that happens when hair is tied or braided too tightly. You can see red and irritated bits on the scalp
Telogen effluvium: This is brought on by abrupt or extreme stress like fever or surgery or loss of close person or due to certain medicines. Normally the hair gets back to normal once the stress factor is removed.
Nutritional deficiency: This is not that common but can still happen
Endocrine problems: One of the causes for causing hair loss in children could be due to thyroid related problems. It occurs when the thyroid is underactive and the production of lower level of thyroid hormone can lead to hair loss. You can diagnose this by a blood test and a scan of the gland. This can be treated with medication to make up for the deficient hormone but will be based on a lot of factors, like :
- Age , health condition and overall medical history
- The level of the condition
- The kid’s tolerance of the medicine and treatment
- The expectations and opinion
Causes other than medical:
As we can see there are many reasons of hair loss that may need a healthcare professional’s expertise. There could also be others that you can solve on your own:
- Hair loss that occurs in newborn infants. This tends to happen with newborn babies who lose the hair in the first few months and is replaced with permanent hair
- Sometimes babies have a spot that starts balding during the age of 3 months to 6 months due to rubbing against a crib or mattress. Once the child starts assuming other positions the hair loss should stop
- Abuse like pulling or harsh combing can also result in hair loss. Being gentle can help hair growth.
