FRUITS- PART OF HEALTHY LIFE: A fruit is mainly the fleshy product of the tree or the other plants that carries their seeds and can be involved as food in a daily meal. As the fruits are natural products and will not cause any of the harm to our body we consume fruits regularly even without knowing the harmful or beneficial effects of them.
As the fruits growing in different regions contains different nutrients and micro-nutrients so they also vary in their effects on the health of humans.
Tropical Fruits growing in the Tropical region are a part of Healthy and balanced diet and contains loads of micro nutrients, digestive-supporting enzymes, antioxidants, and fibers. Due to which these are more preferred during pregnancy but some of these fruits can cause complications if eaten in excess during pregnancy. So here are some of the fruits that may cause the complications during the pregnancy.
PAPAYA: Preliminary research in animals has provided evidence for the potential contraceptive and abortifacient capability of papaya. Laboratory studies have also shown that papaya seeds have contraceptive effects in adult male langur monkeys, and possibly in adult male humans. In Asia- mainly in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, Papaya is historically used as an emergency contraceptive and abortifacient. Unripe papaya is particularly dangerous to developing embryos, since its compounds trigger powerful uterine contractions. Also large amount of consumption of ripe papaya can cause miscarriage. This adverse effect on pregnancy is a little less if papaya is consumed in a moderate quantity and is fully ripe.
PINEAPPLE: It is not only a delicious fruit but also rich in many vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamin C, potassium and thiamine. It could be helpful during pregnancy as it is full of nutrients. However, it causes miscarriage in early stage of pregnancy. Fresh pineapple contains a protease enzyme known as bromelain which is likely to cause abortifacient effects in pregnant female. If a woman is pregnant then she should not eat pineapple in excess quantity particularly during the early stages of pregnancy. Meat tenderizer, made from protein digesting enzymes found in pineapple and papaya can also cause the similar effects (miscarriage or stimulate birth). Therefore these meat tenderizers should be avoided during pregnancy. However, there is no adequate research linking the consumption of pineapple juice to miscarriage or accidental birth. Bromelain is present only in fresh pineapple and destroyed when the fruit is juiced or canned.
POMEGRANATE: Being referred to as a ‘Gift from God’ since the biblical times, pomegranate is a fruit with numerous nutritional benefits. But are these fruits safe to eat during pregnancy? Modern testing has shown that pomegranate does have contraceptive effects. The uterine contracting property of these fruits may cause serious hazard like abortion, when consumed in early trimesters of pregnancy. These contraction-stimulating compounds found in highest concentration in pomegranate seeds, so if you are consuming the pomegranate with their seeds during the pregnancy then the chances of miscarriage become high. In ancient times pomegranate seeds were used as abortifacient.
Here, the question arises is that when this fruits are not suitable to eat during pregnancy than what must a pregnant woman eat? The answer is however these fruits are not suitable if eaten in excess quantity. They have a little or no effect if consumed in moderate quantity. Papaya is dangerous when it is unripe. Fully ripe fruit is free from papain and harm may be least. Pineapple also does not show abortifacient effect when it is juiced or canned. Only fresh pineapple can show the miscarriage property. Talking about the pomegranate, seeds are harmful not the fruit. So the pregnant women should take care of such properties of the fruits before consuming them.
